Our goal is to provide the best consultation services possible to improve Indian communities and traditional homelands, both on and off the Reservation. We aim to achieve this goal through collaboration, research, creativity and experience.
As Native people ourselves, we saw a need for an Native owned environmental consulting organization that understands 1st-hand how environmental, social, cultural, legal, and economic issues impact Native Peoples. Over the years, we have observed non-Indian owned and operated businesses capture the “lion’s share” of tribal government contracting opportunities.
For example, from 2016-2017 the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes awarded 32 Independent Contract Agreements (ICAs) for professional services and only three were awarded to TERO Certified Businesses. During this time the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes spent a total of $3.4 million on professional services, of which TERO Certified Businesses only captured $27,850 or less than 1% of the total potential contracting opportunity.
It is our belief that when non-Indian owned/operated businesses provide almost all of the Tribes’ professional services, work products will lack a clear understanding of Native American issues, priorities, or how Tribal governmental actions impact actually affect their own Native communities. This puts Native communities at higher risks of exploitation and marginalization.
It was for these reasons that we founded Big Tree Environmental LLC. Our goal is to provide high quality professional consultant services from a tribal perspective.
